Length of
Engagement:
The length of
full-sized fastener threads that engage in the nut material.
The length of the lead thread is not counted in the length of
engagement, since its reduced size minimizes any performance
benefits. The length of engagement is usually expressed in
relationship to the nominal diameter of the screw (e.g. 2 to
2-1/2 diameters of engagement).

Fastener Services |
| |
Fastener distributors
often provide technical assistance to the customer
on fastener standards to aid in their selection
process. They provide training material to the
customer.
Other fastener distributors help with the
standardization of fasteners. This task can be done
in in several different ways, but one of the most
effective is to analyze an actual customer supplied
product. For example, in a lab, customer supplied
products ranging from lawn mowers to soda dispensers
to furniture are reviewed. Current fastener usage
and what the customer can change to provide a more
consistent and standardized fastened product is
analyzed.
Distributors who have contact with the customer and
their designers means fastener alternatives at the
most logical time; during the actual design phase of
the project.
Quality Assurance Labs are able to provide the
customer with fastener mechanical and chemical
analysis. In the event of a fastener failure,
testing will aid the customer with sleuthing the
possible causes. In the event of fastener misuse,
engineering experts at fastener distribution
companies can work with the customer on possible
alternatives.
